March Art Exhibit: New Works
Artist: Santiago Portilla
Opening Reception: March 6th, 6 - 9pm
Statement by Artist:
“The photographs in this show were taken at my grandparents’ house in Oakland.
I set out to explore this place that was a big part of my upbringing - to capture it’s intimate corners in the way that I saw them as a kid. And as I walked around taking photos and trying not to wake my grandparents when they napped, it was like being six years old again, exploring an adult house, seeing the clock stuck on the same time, the rain on the garage floor, the chair in the living room.
My intention is to document the beautiful, overlooked details of this space, full of the memories that resonate in the house and it’s immediate surroundings- the walkways, the garden, the garage. And while looking at these things through a camera I realize that my eye as a child and my eye as an adult are not altogether different. And I see now that it’s perhaps because I had such an eye for detail as a kid that I found photography.”
